Questions and aims

Main aims are

1. Documentation of the traditional medicinal plant use and knowledge among the Bai people in the Shaxi Valley.

2. Identification of medicinal plants suitable for cultivation.

3. Elaboration of suggestions for local cultivation projects according to the collected results.

In the frame of an ethnobotanical study (master thesis) the current situation of medicinal plant use in the Shaxi Valley is analysed, and suggestions regarding the cultivation of medicinal plants are developed. First, the traditional plant knowledge of the local people is documented, and second, medicinal plants suitable for cultivation are identified, considering the traditional knowledge, the environmental conditions and agricultural practices, as well as the needs of the (international) market for cultivated medicinal plants.
